The 70-acre restoration site along State Route 255 was historically part of Humboldt Bay. The land was drained, diked, and used as pastureland for over a century. Recently, the land was purchased by Caltrans to restore back to native wetland habitat. Tidal influence was restored to the portion of the site that abuts McDaniel Slough. Samara Restoration grew and planted 2,000 riparian trees & shrubs and 15,000 native wetland plants across the site to reintroduce native wetland species to the historic pasture, and we continue to maintain the site to ensure plant establishment. This project is part of a series working to restore tideland around Humboldt Bay.
